Apprenticeship Programme

AAB are proud to have been certified with a Developing the Young Workforce Gold Quality Accreditation. This achievement was gained in December 2016, as a result of the firm's continuous efforts to enhance our involvement with young people by inspiring the next generation, offering numerous routes to gain genuine work experience, third party initiatives such as enterprise projects and mentoring programmes, vocational learning and of course providing young people with numerous job opportunities. As a Developing the Young Workforce partner company, we are proud of the fact that we actively engage with our community, including schools and other educational institutions, ensuring that young people are provided with the knowledge they require to make an informed decision about their future careers and are aware of the various routes they can take to ensure they achieve their full potential.

We employ school and college leavers across the firm, in both our client-facing and support departments, each role offered by the firm is unique and tailored to the individual, allowing for time to learn the role within the department and settle into the workplace, before setting out a formal training plan. With a clear career path outlined, practical experience is gained from day one, with routes to professional qualifications discussed and agreed at the time when the trainee is ready to take on this study commitment.

As part of our apprenticeship programme you will also be joining our other trainees undertaking internship, student placement and graduate trainee roles and learning alongside them. We are a very social firm, value good relationships and encourage participation in the numerous sports, social and fundraising events organised by our various committees.

Our recruitment process for our 2017 intake is now closed. The process for our 2018 intake will open in December 2017. To apply please email your CV and covering letter to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Office Open Evening

Our apprenticeship programme provides a fantastic alternative route into the accountancy and tax professions. We recognise that it is a big decision whether to go to University or not and we want to provide as much information as possible to support your decision to ultimately make the choice that is right for you. We annually hold an open evening in December where students will have the opportunity to come into our office and learn from some of our staff and trainees about their personal career route, the different departments and positions held throughout our firm and the opportunities available.

If you are interested in joining the accountancy profession then our open evening will help inform your decision on whether you want to join straight from school or go to University and join us as a Graduate Trainee once you have completed your degree.

We’re happy to help, please do get in touch if you (or your parents!) have any questions. Email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or give us a call on 01224 625111. Our next open evening will take place in December 2017 and registrations for this event will open in Autumn 2017.

Professional Qualification

Our apprenticeship programme is tailored to individual capabilities and goals; however school and college leavers typically join our tax, payroll or accounting services departments and undertake one of the following routes to professional qualification:

  • Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS - www.icas.com)
  • Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA – www.accaglobal.com)
  • Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT - www.aat.org.uk)
  • Association of Taxation Technician (ATT – www.att.org.uk): On completion of the ATT qualification, students can go on to study for membership of the Chartered Institute of Taxation as a Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA – www.ciot.org.uk)
  • Learn Payroll (www.learnpayroll.co.uk): for those who want to progress their career quickly in payroll and ultimately become a qualified Payroll Technician.

Study leave is provided and we will fully fund your examination and training for your first attempt at the examinations.

Whilst you are training, our partners, managers, and dedicated Training and Development Manager, will monitor your progress and are available to provide help and support.

We support our trainees to become all-round business advisors and so along with professional study we place equal priority on providing support to enhance the development of soft skills, including presentation, communication and team work skills.

Entry Requirements

We are looking for students who are passionate and enthusiastic about pursuing a career in accountancy and who have had a strong performance throughout their time at school. We therefore look for a minimum of ABBB Higher grades achieved in one sitting (or equivalent 275 UCAS points) as well as National 5’s English and Maths at grade 1 or 2, or equivalent. Credit will be given to students who have studied Accounting, Economics and/or Business Management, or gained work experience in a business environment, however these are not essential requirements. The success of our firm is based upon our people, and their individual qualities are what makes AAB different. The most important part of our recruitment process is finding students who can demonstrate our people qualities. We assess all candidates who join the firm at any level against these values.

Please note that for those applying in their 5th year of study, or before they have received their Highers results, offers made will be conditional upon results received.

Our vacancies will be advertised from December each year closing in mid-March, with interviews taking place before the Easter holidays. Successful applicants will begin their training with us during the Summer.

What Our School Leavers Say...

“After studying higher accountancy at school and really enjoying it, I decided I was going to do something business related, so I jumped at the opportunity for on-the-job training with AAB. The firm has been so supportive of me since joining and starting my exams, which I am now working my way through. It has been really good and everyone’s been so helpful. Ultimately, I want to qualify as a chartered accountant and progress through the firm, there are loads of opportunities for moving up the ladder here. As an accounting services assistant, I am mainly concerned with outsourcing and year-end prep, preparing accounts, for example, doing a bit of everything. Every day is different in our department.”

Alisa Lawrence, Accounting Services

From day one you can expect plenty of exposure to clients and challenging projects that will help you develop the skills necessary to succeed as a professional. Don't just take our word for it; hear what our current trainees have to say about their experiences at AAB in our trainee profiles.
